Chihuahuas on a Plane

It never ceases to amaze me how influential Hollywood is on our society. From social issues to fashion trends, Hollywood leads the way. This influence apparently has created an over abundance of unwanted Chihuahuas in "Star Struck" Southern California. From the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua to Paris Hilton the trendy pressure to accessorize one’s life with a lap dog has put many Chihuahuas in danger in Los Angeles.

Taking a “fashion forward” shallow approach to owning a dog means the novelty wears off quickly and the pup soon becomes unwanted. This is "LIKE" a serious problem in LA.

Don’t believe me?

As evidence, I point to a December 3rd American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston. On this routine flight, 25 adoptable Chihuahuas were grateful that their airfare was not only a passage to a new city but also a passage to a saved life.

All 25 Chihuahuas would have been euthanized if they remained in Los Angeles.

Because of a deadly timeline the Kinder Rescue in Los Angeles, who was housing the 25 Chihuahuas, was desperately looking for a life saving solution to move the dogs out of LA.

The Kinder Rescue was working hard with Humane Society for Greater Nashua of New Hampshire to move the dogs to New Hampshire where the prospect of successful adoption was very strong. Evidently the Hollywood influence has not had such an adverse influence on the northeast. Luckily for the 25 canine passengers, New Hampshire does not have an over abundance of unwanted Chihuahuas.

The two shelter groups were working desperately against the clock to move the 25 to the northeast. Unfortunately that kind of mass exodus is expensive thus preventing the life saving journey.

But after contacting the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation the financial problem was solved. The organization, which supports animal rescue efforts, offered $25,000 to fly the pups from the West Coast. 25 tail wagging Chihuahuas are barking up many thanks to the organization.

On Wednesday night December 3rd, the 25 Chihuahuas were greeted at Boston's Logan International Airport by volunteers from Humane Society for Greater Nashua. All 25 dogs will be ready for adoption by Sunday.
