Four-legged fundraiser to benefit local pet-related charities
IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2010) – See Spot surf during the “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition,” the nation’s original surfing competition for man’s best friend. Named one of the hottest events in the world, this year’s event is expected to draw more than 60 competitors and thousands of spectators from across the U.S.
Organized by the pet-friendly Loews Coronado Bay Resort, the popular competition is an extension of Loews Hotels’ award-winning Loews Loves Pets program and has become a hugely successful fundraiser for pet-related charities. Since the competition’s 2006 inception, more than $35,000 has been donated to various non-profit organizations.
The 2010 “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition” takes place on Saturday, May 22, in Imperial Beach, Calif. with an action-packed schedule featuring:
10 to 10:30 a.m. Optional surfing lessons for less experienced canines eager to catch their first wave 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Division One: Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under) 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Division Two: Large Surf Dogs (41 pounds and over) 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Division Three: Tandem Surfing (dogs and humans) 1:45 to 2 p.m. Awards Ceremony
Judging will be conducted by Mayor Jim Janney, Mayor of Imperial Beach; Kathleen Cochran, general manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort, and Teevan McManus, owner of Coronado Surfing Academy. Each dog/team will have 10 minutes to catch their top two waves, and will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.”
In addition to endless bragging rights, the first place winner of each division will score a ton of great prizes, including the ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort.
The cost to enter the competition is $50 for Division One or Two and $55 for Division Three. All contestants score a great goody bag and competition medal. Attendance is free. To register or for more information, please visit www.LoewsSurfDog.com.
